We are an energetic group of volunteers committed to organising the annual Mad March Hare.
Being a member of the Organising Team is so rewarding. I get to work with the most fantastic volunteers and to see the hundreds of participants coming across the finish line beaming with a sense of achievement make the many hours of work that go into the planning and preparation so worthwhile.
I am a keen walker and a member of Swindon Twin Peaks. I have always promoted health and fitness and annually take part in the London Moonwalk. I am also a fundraiser and supporter of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
My introduction to walking was through Swindon Twin Peaks, and I went on to complete 6 Moonwalks and also the Swindon Half Marathon. Everyone I have walked with over the years has been helpful and supportive and I would like to do something in return.
Having been inspired by the people I have walked with I was delighted to join the Mad March Hare Organising Team. They are enthusiastic and determined to make the event an enjoyable experience for both new and existing walkers and runners.
Having survived cancer twice in the last 18 years I am acutely aware of what a great contribution charities make to the lives of those affected by this disease.
I am proud to be part of a team which organises such a successful annual event – contributing a significant sum to Breakthrough Breast Cancer Wiltshire.
This is one way in which I am able to “give back” for the help I have been given.
I started power walking with Swindon Twin Peaks in 2003 to help cope with being diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Since then I have completed 7 marathons (including New York in 2009). My personal motivation for being part of the Mad March Hare Organising Team is the pride and satisfaction I get from seeing new people start walking, enjoy getting fit and healthy, completing the Mad March Hare as their first event, achieving their personal goals and gaining self confidence.
I was a volunteer at two previous Mad March Hare events and have taken part in one. When the opportunity for the position of Merchandiser on the Mad March Hare Organising Team came up I jumped at the opportunity to be part of a team who organise an annual event which makes a difference and raises money whilst doing so.
After taking part in the Mad March Hare or attending just as spectator I could not fail to see the amount of hard work the organising team put into making the event so successful but equally the enjoyment and sense of pride they rightly take from it. When to oppunitity arose I could not pass the chance to be involved in such a great team and contributing to making 2012 even more successful.
I have volunteered because I lost my sister to cancer and raising funds to lengthen people's time with their loved ones is a very precious gift we can give. We may never be able to find a cure for all forms of cancer but at least we can do our best while we are here together.
